Looking after your hearing aids

Regular care helps keep your hearing aids performing at their best. Simple daily habits and ongoing maintenance can improve sound quality, reduce the need for repairs, and extend the life of your devices.

Daily care

Taking a few moments each day to care for your hearing aids will help keep them performing reliably.

Wipe your hearing aids with a soft, dry cloth to remove any moisture or earwax. When removing your devices at night, check for any visible debris and store them safely in their case or charger. If your hearing aids use disposable batteries, leave the battery door open overnight to help conserve battery life.

Ongoing maintenance

In addition to daily care, regular maintenance helps prevent issues and keep your devices in good condition.

Clean your hearing aids routinely and replace domes and wax filters as needed. Avoid exposing your devices to moisture, debris or products such as hairspray. Storing them in a dry location and using a drying kit, if available, can help protect them over time.

If you experience a build-up of earwax, speak to your doctor or audiologist about safe removal — avoid using cotton buds.

Hearing aids also benefit from regular professional care, including an annual review with your audiologist.

Troubleshooting common issues

If your hearing aids are not working as expected, there are a few simple checks you can try.

Hearing aid not working

Check that the battery is charged or replaced, and inspect the device for any wax or debris that may be blocking sound. Cleaning mould or replacing the tube, dome or wax filter can often resolve the issue. If the problem continues, contact your clinic for advice.

Hearing aid whistling

Whistling (or feedback) may occur if the device is not sitting securely in your ear. Ensuring a proper fit can resolve this. Wax build up is also a common cause of feedback as it reflects the sound out of your ear canal – ask to have your ears checked and potentially have the wax removed. If the issue persists, your audiologist may need to adjust your hearing aid settings or review the coupling on the end of the hearing aid.
