Ear Science is proud to support a new Smoothie Station at the Jigalong Youth & Cultural Centre, made possible through the Healthy Ears on Country partnership with BHP. More than just a popular daily treat, the smoothie program is an important health promotion initiative helping to improve children’s nutrition, health and wellbeing while supporting positive ear health outcomes.

The initiative was developed with guidance from a dietitian and child health nurse, who highlighted the importance of nutritious foods in supporting healthy growth, immune function and development. Smoothies were chosen over juices because they use whole fruits and vegetables, retaining natural fibre while providing essential vitamins and minerals. Ingredients such as milk, Greek yoghurt, berries, bananas and mangoes help children work towards their recommended daily fruit and vegetable intake while providing important sources of calcium and protein.

Made possible through support from BHP, Ear Science supplied the commercial-grade smoothie machine, and since it’s arrival, the program has become a daily highlight, with children regularly enjoying freshly made smoothies and developing positive healthy eating habits.

The program is also creating valuable leadership opportunities. Young people including Calisha Jeffries and Emelda Samson have been trained to prepare, serve and promote the smoothies, building skills in food handling, nutrition, teamwork and responsibility.

A huge thank you to Alarna Kuipers and Lisa Arber, whose vision and collaboration helped bring the program to life, and to our valued partners PAMS, the Jigalong Youth & Cultural Centre and BHP for their commitment to supporting healthier futures for children in remote communities.
