Science Lands in Parliament

Lead researcher at Ear Science Dr Dona Jayakody was one of 19 scientists invited to present their research to parliamentarians at the ‘Science Lands in Parliament 2019’.

Organised by the Australian Society of Medical Research (ASMR), this event was hosted by the Hon. Roger Cook MLA, Minister for Health and Mental Health, in the Aboriginal People’s Gallery at the WA Parliament House.

“The Science Lands in Parliament event is a chance for WA medical researchers to share their projects with key members of parliament,” said Dr Jayakody. “I’m thrilled to have been chosen to present my research program, which is aiming to unravel the links between hearing loss, mental well-being, cognition and dementia.”

“More than 35,000 Western Australians are estimated to be living with dementia, and developing effective strategies to prevent dementia has become a global health priority.”

“Available evidence indicates that hearing loss may account for 9% of the risk for developing dementia. Our research is seeking to reduce this risk, by understanding the link and developing long-term successful solutions for clinicians to implement.”
