Types of hearing loss

Hearing loss is generally grouped into three main types, depending on which part of the ear is affected.

Conductive Hearing Loss

Occurs when sound cannot travel efficiently through the outer or middle ear.
Common causes include earwax build-up, fluid in the middle ear, ear infections, or problems with the eardrum or middle ear bones.

What this means: Sounds may seem quieter or muffled. This type of hearing loss can be temporary or medically treatable.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss

The most common type of hearing loss, caused by damage to the inner ear or hearing nerve.
Common causes include age-related hearing loss, noise exposure, genetics, or certain medical conditions.

What this means: Sounds may be unclear rather than just quiet, making it harder to understand speech — especially in noisy environments.

Mixed Hearing Loss

A combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.

What this means: There may be both a blockage or issue in the outer/middle ear and damage in the inner ear.

Levels of hearing loss

The level of hearing loss describes how much your hearing is reduced. This is usually measured during a hearing assessment.

Mild Hearing Loss

You may have difficulty hearing soft sounds or following conversations in noisy environments.

Moderate Hearing Loss

Hearing normal conversation becomes more difficult, and you may often ask others to repeat themselves.

Moderately Severe Hearing Loss

Understanding speech becomes challenging without support, even in quieter settings.

Severe Hearing Loss

Only loud sounds are heard clearly, and speech is difficult to understand without amplification.

Profound Hearing Loss

Very limited or no hearing. Communication may rely on visual cues or specialised hearing solutions.
