Hsern Ern Tan
Dr Hsern Ern Tan is a medical doctor and PhD candidate at the UWA School of Surgery through Ear Science Institute Australia.
Hsern graduated from UWA Medical School with Honours in 2014, after first starting university with two years of Dentistry. His otolaryngology research interests first developed in 2012 through work with Ear Science Institute Australia, where he is now commencing his PhD, investigating how we can repair chronic tympanic membrane perforations through the combination of 3D printing technology an optical coherence tomography. He recently won the Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship to fund his PhD, which will allow him exposure to corporate networks, international experience and leadership development programs with the Australian Graduate School of Management.
He has a keen interest in research translation, innovation, and medical start-up, recently completing the SPARK Co-Lab medical design course and successfully working with a team to create a patented device that aims to lower the incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia in ICU. He is passionate about third-world medicine and aspires one day to be a travelling surgeon.
